Intro to Surfing with Emotional Clarity and Ocean Respect
At Swell, surf coaching begins long before you catch a wave. We offer emotionally attuned, trauma-informed instruction for beginners of all ages; focusing on safety, sensory pacing, and foundational skills.
Whether you’re dipping into ocean movement for the first time or returning after time away, our Maui-based coaching meets you where you are.
We don’t rush you into the line up. We teach you how to listen to the ocean.
What We Cover in Intro to Surfing
Parts of the board
Learn names and purpose of each part: nose, tails, rails, deck, fins, and how they shape movement, balance and safety.

Waxing the board
Learn how to prepare your board for grip and movement, an act of care and readiness.
Putting on the Leash
Understand how to secure your board safely and why it matters for you and others.
Reading the Weather and Ocean Conditions
We teach you to notice tides, wind, swell, direction, and how to make emotionally clear decisions about when to enter the water.
Somatic Warmups
Breathe, body awareness, and sport-specific movement to prepare your nervous system and muscles.

Staying Close to Shore
We begin by staying on the inside, building trust with the ocean and your body.
Building Paddle Strength
Practice paddling with rhythm and breath.
Safe Falling and Recovery
Learn how to fall safely, turn your board around, and reorient using a landmark.

Surf Etiquette
Understand how to share space in the water; who has priority on the wave, how to communicate with other surfers, and how to move with respect and awareness.

What We Don’t Do
We don’t push you into waves. At Swell, you won’t be launched, towed, or rushed into the lineup. You’ll learn to paddle on your own; building strength, rhythm, and trust with your body and the ocean.
Only when you’re ready and able to paddle into a wave yourself, do we step into lifeguard mode: watching closely, offering tips, and celebrating your process.
This isn’t performance coaching. It’s relational coaching. We meet you where you are, and stay with you as you grow.
